CAN I HAVE A CONSULTATION BEFORE I DECIDE TO COME FOR LESSONS?
The best consultation is to have a lesson. Kathy explains: “I only offer
consultations by phone, for a max. of 15 mins. I don’t offer full, in-person ‘consultations’ because a consultation always ends up
becoming a lesson itself ! We will have a conversation discussing your own needs
(vocally speaking), your goals and what you’d like to get out of singing
lessons. After talking on the phone, you will have a better sense of my style of
communicating. You then have the option of trying a first lesson, and that is
the very best way to see if you are comfortable with my style of coaching. Many
professionals charge for consultations these days, so this way you are actually
learning something while you’re testing my lesson out. In fact, I’m auditioning
for you.”
WHAT WILL I LEARN IN SINGING LESSONS WITH
KATHY?
That is truly a loaded question. I have never taught the same lesson once since 1992!
Each lesson has a life of its own, and each person is working on their own
unique vocal agendas and curriculum. You as a student will have to trust my
expertise regarding what we should work on, in conjunction with what you want to
get out of your lessons. Let me put it this way: If I have a young student who
wants to perform music similar to Kanye West, we won't be working on a song by
Andrea Bocelli. If a young lady is preparing for a college musical theatre
entrance audition, we probably won't be working on a song by Beyonce. There will be a focus on basic theory as well, including minor scales,
delivering a monologue, etc. What you will learn will depend on many factors.
Lessons are very interactive. Rates include all learning materials and on-line or telephone
help.
HOW LONG IS EACH LESSON?
Only 30 minutes for a lesson is not enough time. You warm up, work on a little technique and it's time to go!
I do have some students who come from out of town on a less regular basis, in which case we arrange either a 90 minute or two-hour intensive lesson, but for most students: it's one hour.
*Either weekly, or once every other week. I try to accomodate your schedule.
WILL I HAVE HOMEWORK
TO DO?
Yes, I give assignments to all students,
and it is approx. 80% practicing. The ONLY way to improve one's voice, to learn
to use the correct muscles, to integrate the whole body into singing, etc.: is
to DO IT.
- Someone can talk about singing for years.
- Someone can read singing for years.
- Someone can plan to sing for years.
- Someone can think about singing for years.
BUT … with any physical skill (an activity you do which requires your body to
be used in a specific way), it takes to improve. You actually have to do it. So
yes, there are songs and vocal exercises to practice, as well as daily warm-ups.
How LONG you spend on homework is up to you. I make recommendations. My lessons are
non-credit and for self improvement or upgrading. We address the importance of a
regular practice routine and aim to make regular structured vocalizing a part of
your lifestyle. If you are keen
to feel a sense of vocal improvement, I give out exercises and performance
assignments that are to be done as well as possible. If someone doesn't practice
between lessons, there will not be any penalty, of course. But remember that
progress depends pretty much on how you structure your practice. We do what we
can, and follow the honour system. Expect to invest a minimum of 10-15 minutes
per day. A maximum of an hour per day (observing proper use and maintenance of
the voice).
HOW MANY LESSONS DO I PAY FOR AT ONCE?
A minimum of 5 lessons; no maximum. If you
like your first lesson with Kathy, be prepared to pre-pay 5 lessons that day,
after your first lesson. If you don't wish to continue for the 5-lesson package,
then payment for the first class is all that is required.
CAN I GET A RECEIPT?
Yes. Receipts are issued at year-end by regular mail, by e-mail, or in -person, upon request.
METHODS OF PAYMENT
Currently: cheque or cash
